Hidden World of Cancer Cartography: From Doctors’ Notes to Global Health Maps

On 12 November 2025, Jennifer Fraser, Thandeka Cochrane, David Reubi and Philip Jagessar convened a hands-on workshop at the Science Gallery that explored the hidden history and socio-technical practices of cancer mapping. Led by experts from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer and the African Cancer Registry Network (including Freddie Bray, Max Parkin, Biying Liu and Gladys Chesumbai) this event showed how scribbled doctors’ notes in local clinics are transformed to sweeping global health maps, prompting critical reflection on the labour and politics of cancer mapping, and what is gained and lost when local realities are scaled up and amalgamated into a bigger picture view.

This event was supported by a SSHM-Wellcome Network Grant.
